The Sun: Friend or Foe

Summertime presents a great opportunity for outdoor sports, cookouts, and sunbathing.  Despite the warmth of the sun, the sun can cause damage to skin and eyes.  In the past 30 years, the incidence of skin cancer exceeds all other cancers.1   Eyelids are particular susceptible to skin cancer. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to damage in the macula.

Wearing sunscreen is a necessity in today’s environment.  Remember it needs to be reapplied throughout the day.  Additionally, sunglasses that protect for UVA and UVB rays should be worn when in the sun. They should also be large enough to cover your eyelids. Wearing a hat will give added protection to the upper eyelids and scalp.

Stop by Keamy Eye & Laser Centre and let us help you become sun protected.
