Cataract Surgery is one of the most commonly performed eye procedures. Most commonly, a cataract forms as the eye ages. The eye has a lens just like the lens in a camera. During childhood the lens is clear. As the eye ages, the lens becomes more cloudy. The lens continues to get more and more cloudy until it reduces vision. Depending on the type of cataract formed, distance or near vision or both can be reduced. Patients often complain of halos at night, difficulty with headlights or bright sunlight. Color perception can also be distorted. New glasses sometimes help because the prescription changes as the cataract grows. When the cataract is mature, new glasses do not help since the lens is too cloudy or opaque to see through. At that point, cataract surgery is necessary.
Cataract surgery typically is done as an outpatient in the hospital or surgery center. The surgery involves removal of the mature lens or cataract and replacement with an implant.
Usually the surgery is performed with a small incision with no sutures. Phacoemulsification of the lens breaks up the cataract into tiny pieces for removal through the small incision. In some instances, a larger incision or different technique may be required.
Cataract surgery usually has little down time though some activities must be limited during the postoperative period. Patients typically follow up one day, one week and one month after the surgery. Patients typically use several eye drop medications for approximately one month.
Though most patients are pleased with the results, cataract surgery is not without risks.
The risks and will be thoroughly reviewed prior to scheduling surgery.

Until recently, all cataract patients received monofocal lenses or implants, which required them to use reading glasses or bifocals following surgery. Now cataract patients have a choice. They can choose to have a mutifocal or accommodating lens such as the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL or the Crystalens®. These lenses
can provide quality vision for both distance and near, decreasing dependence on reading glasses. These new lenses allow many people to read price tags, cell phone numbers, magazines and still drive without glasses.
Not everyone is a candidate, but it is an option worth discussing with Dr. Keamy.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the United States. A simple painless eye exam can detect the disease. With early detection and treatment, glaucoma can usually be controlled and blindness prevented.
Glaucoma can affect anyone from newborn infants to the elderly. It has been estimated that up to 3 million Americans have glaucoma. At least half of those people do not know they have it because glaucoma usually has no symptoms. People who are at a greater risk for glaucoma usually have the following conditions:
- At Least 45 Years Old Without Regular Eye Exams
- A Family History of Glaucoma
- Abnormally High Eye Pressure
- African Descent
- Nearsightedness
- Diabetes
- Previous Eye Injury
- Regular, Long-term Use of Cortisone/Steroid Products
To detect glaucoma, Dr. Keamy will test your visual acuity, visual field, dilate your pupils and test the pressure in your eye. Regular and complete eye exams help to monitor the changes in your eyesight and will help to determine whether you may develop glaucoma.
Treatment to control glaucoma include medications in the form of either eye drops or pills, laser surgery and conventional surgery.
