OUT OF THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE

There is certainly more to good vision than simply looking straight ahead with sufficient clarity. This is why a comprehensive eye exam is so important. Among the many aspects of vision that the ophthalmologist will want to carefully assess is “peripheral vision,” or side vision. Peripheral vision is instrumental in ensuring driving safety by helping to increase reaction time significantly. It is in everyone’s best interests that it be tested (“visual field test”). Many people are unaware that their peripheral limitations  can cause them to constantly move their gaze in order to focus. While sudden loss of peripheral vision may be indicative of a detached retina, progressive loss of peripheral vision may be due to a number of possible causes.

P.S. Symptoms of peripheral vision loss include decreased ability to see in dim light and an inability to navigate while walking.
