What is Voluma?

Woman face | Voluma

Voluma is a FDA-approved dermal filler formulated specifically to add volume to the face around the cheeks and chin. This is the only injectable gel created to provide a subtle, natural enhancement to the mid-face, addressing changes in definition that occur over time.

Candidates For Voluma Treatments

Adults of any age who notice changes to their mid-face or at the chin or jaw line may be considered good candidates for treatment with Voluma. Typical early signs of aging may include the following:

  • A visible decrease in volume
  • A sagging of the cheeks
  • The loss of noticeable contour around the chin.

While these are more commonly problems that people face as they age, younger men and women may experience them as well due to weight loss, heredity or a number of other factors.

Benefits Of Voluma Injections

Voluma comes with a great deal of benefits for those that choose to receive this treatment. These benefits include the following:

  • It returns a firmer shape to the jaw line.
  • Restores more youthful contours: This is done by plumping up the area that so often loses volume as part of the aging process.
  • Voluma is effective and long lasting. In many patients, the results will last for a period of up to 18 months.

How Does Voluma Work To Rejuvenate The Skin?

The active ingredient in Voluma is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance naturally produced within the skin. As we get older, the levels of HA present in the skin begin to decline, resulting in a loss of volume and sunken or sagging cheeks. Voluma integrates into the existing collagen and elastin in the skin tissue to offer greater support and elasticity. This can provide a noticeable smoothing and firming to the skin and lend the facial structure more substantial definition.

Voluma is the latest in the line of dermal fillers. These various formulas have a successful history of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and folds in the skin and rejuvenating the face.

The Voluma Procedure

Voluma injections typically take about 15 minutes to administer in the doctor’s office. The gel formula contains lidocaine to minimize discomfort, so there is no need for additional anesthesia. The injection is designed to reach the deep layers beneath the skin’s surface to provide the most benefit.

The results are visible immediately after the procedure. There is very little or no downtime required following a treatment with Voluma. Most patients can resume all of their typical daily activities right away after their treatment session.

Do Juvéderm Voluma injections hurt?

When you come to our Westborough or Salem locations for Juvéderm Voluma injections, we first apply topical numbing cream across the cheeks and/or chin areas where Dr. Keamy will be injecting Voluma. Also, Voluma includes Lidocaine in its formulation, providing a second level of comfort. Despite Dr. Keamy injecting Voluma more deeply than most other fillers, these are not painful treatments.

Why are my cheeks becoming more and more flat?

Voluma | Woman FaceCollagen is the body’s protein that is responsible for building and maintaining a support structure under the skin to keep it firm, plump, and young looking. The problem is that after our 20th birthday, our bodies produce less collagen. How much less? Collagen production drops an accumulating one percent each year. By the time you have celebrated your dreaded 50th, your body is now making 30 percent less collagen.

Don’t believe it? Compare photos of your face at 20 and 50 — you’ll see the difference. In particular, your cheeks will look much flatter and often will have a hollow appearance.

How long before I will see my results with Voluma?

As with each of the Juvéderm and Restylane lines of hyaluronic acid fillers we provide at Keamy Cosmetic Centre, Voluma delivers instant results. As soon as Dr. Keamy injects the Voluma gel into your sunken cheeks or thinning chin area the hyaluronic acid immediately binds with nearby water molecules and this instantly adds volume, plumping and firming the skin in the area.

Will there be recovery?

There isn’t any downtime or recovery. You may have some slight redness and possible itching, but this shouldn’t prevent you from taking part in your normal activities.

For 12 hours after your injections, however, you need to refrain from rubbing the injected areas. This allows the Voluma gel to fully settle in.

Will my face look natural after having Voluma injected?

Our cheeks and chin area do not involve the same movements as say the area around our mouth or our upper face. When Dr. Keamy injects Voluma, it simply returns volume to the area. This replaces the collagen that has been lost due to natural aging, sun damage, and other causes. Because of this, your newly plumped cheeks don’t look artificial; they look younger. That’s because plumper cheeks are one of the hallmarks of youth.

How long will the results from Voluma last?

Juvéderm Voluma is the longest-lasting hyaluronic acid. It keeps filling out your cheeks for up to two full years. Results on the chin typically aren’t quite as long, due to the added movement in this area of the face.

Does the longevity of Juvéderm Voluma results differ between the cheeks and the chin?

All fillers break down more quickly when exposed to movement in the area. That’s why fillers injected around the mouth area tend to last between 9 and 12 months, versus the approximate 24 months with Voluma injections in the cheeks. We move our mouths almost constantly when talking, eating, even breathing. Our cheeks are stable areas of the face that don’t move that often. Our chin area is somewhere in the middle, moving when we move our jaw.

Will I have lumps on my cheeks after injections?

After Dr. Keamy injects Voluma, the area is massaged to spread out the gel evenly. This ensures there aren’t any lumps or bumps.
