Juvéderm®

juvedermDeep wrinkles and furrows may be a part of aging, but they don’t have to be permanent. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm Injectable Gel are a quick and easy solution. They work to erase these lines and restore a younger, more refreshed appearance.

What Is Juvéderm®?

Upload: October 6, 2016Juvederm® is a safe, FDA-approved formula that lasts up to one year. It contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to minimize the mild discomfort that is sometimes associated with receiving an injection. The injection of hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in the skin that adds volume and hydration-is administered directly to targeted areas to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds while also smoothing the skin. It is an effective technique for restoring a youthful plumpness to the skin.

Juvéderm Volbella XC

Juvéderm Volbella ® XC is an FDA approved for adding volume to the lips, but they differ in their approach. Ultra is intended to visibly plump the lips, adding visible volume. Volbella is subtler. It adds volume that isn’t immediately obvious, and it smoothes the vertical lip lines that come with age.

Would Juvéderm Volbella ® XC Be Right For Me?

If your lips are thinner than you’d like, either due to the volume loss that comes with aging or because they’ve always been that way, Juvéderm Volbella ® XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape. Plus, it erases the vertical lines that come from volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella ® XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips.

Juvéderm Volbella ® XC is a hyaluronic acid filler (as are all the Juvederm fillers). It plumps the lips by binding with nearby water molecules to hydrate and fill out the lips. Juvéderm Volbella ® XC results show themselves immediately and will last up to one year.

What is Juvéderm Vollure®?

Juvéderm Vollure® XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers. Vollure® is designed for the correction of moderate to deep creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, and parentheses lines framing the mouth.

What is Juvéderm® Voluma XC?

Dr. Keamy may call it “age-related mid-face volume loss,” but you simply know it as sagging cheeks. Over time, as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look. It can now be used to provide chin augmentation and lower face rejuvenation. It also can last up to 24 months.

What is Juvéderm® Ultra XC?

Most people don’t think of their lips as having lost volume, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Others may never have been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips. This was the first dermal filler created for the lips.

What is Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC?

Like Ultra, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the lips and areas around the mouth. Ultra Plus is composed of bigger molecules than Ultra, making it thicker and a little longer lasting. Ultra Plus is better for severe wrinkles and folds and for extra lip volume enhancement. The volume increase is noticeable with both Ultra and Ultra Plus.

How do I know which Juvéderm® filler is right for my needs?

Juvéderm® XC was the original dermal filler, along with Restylane® (you can get more information on our Restylane® offerings at Keamy here). They were first approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2006. Originally, both lines had only the signature single filler. Over the years, each line has been expanded to target certain areas of the face.

For instance, Juvéderm Voluma® XC is specifically meant to be used on flattened, sagging cheeks or chin. Ultra XC was meant to provide noticeable volume to the lips. Volbella XC came later, meant for adding subtle volume to the lips.

Each of the Juvéderm® fillers we offer at Keamy Eye & Laser Centre has areas of the face where it works the best. But you don’t need to become an expert and try and figure out which filler is the one for you. That’s where we come in. Dr. Keamy has been trained with every filler we offer, and she has over a decade and a half of experience using them.

During your consultation for dermal filler injections, you’ll share with her the areas of your face you’d like to target. From there, Dr. Keamy can suggest the perfect Juvéderm® (or Restylane®) filler she feels matches your needs. She is familiar with each of our offerings and knows which filler will provide the results you’re seeking.

How can I maintain my results after having a Juvéderm® filler injected?

There’s nothing for you to do, at least after 12 hours. For those first 12 hours or so after Dr. Keamy injects your Juvéderm® filler you need to refrain from rubbing the injection sites. This can move the filler from where Dr. Keamy intended it to be.

After those 12 hours, however, there’s nothing for you to do. You can’t impact the duration of your filler in any way, short of trying not to move your facial muscles! Movement is why some areas need filler injections more frequently than others. For instance, Volbella® lasts up to one year, while Voluma® lasts up to two years. What’s up with that? The fillers are of varying thickness and stiffness. The more rigid fillers tend to last longer. Movement also can result in breakdown of the fillers. We move the muscles surrounding our mouth and lips almost continually when talking, eating, even breathing. This breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the filler more quickly. On the other hand, we don’t move our cheeks much at all. That’s why the length of Voluma® results can double those of Volbella® or even Juvéderm® XC.

What should I expect during a Juvéderm® treatment session?

Having an area of volume loss filled with Juvéderm® is simple and takes just 15-30 minutes. For most patients, Dr. Keamy applies topical numbing cream prior to your injections to alleviate any discomfort, so you need to allow 30 minutes or so for that to take effect.

Is there downtime after my Juvéderm® session?

There is no recovery or downtime. You can return to work or your normal activities immediately after your treatment session. Your results are immediate, as well.

How long will my results last with Juvéderm®?

The duration of most injectables varies somewhat based on the individual patient’s metabolism. Still, there are some general measures of durability of these products:

  • Juvéderm Voluma® XC is the longest-lasting hyaluronic filler, restoring cheek volume for up to two years.
  • Juvéderm® XC, Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Vollure® XC, and Volbella® XC last between 9-12 months.
