A Word from Philip about the Optical Shop:

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Philip the new licensed optician has 25 years of experience and a high level of expertise both technically and personally. He hopes to build a bond with the patients, that instills a comforting level of confidence with each transaction. Phillip discusses his goals for the shop:

“New and exciting products! We intend to introduce new lines of frames that incorporate both beauty and quality. Space is an issue for us right now. So, at this point, we’re moving cautiously with new product because in order for it to be displayed properly we need the proper amount of space. I hate a cluttered look, so this is a work in progress. We have already brought in several new designers that have been well received. Our Easy Clip collection provides a selection of frames with both beauty and function as each frame comes with its own matched magnetic sun clip. Our Exces collection has cutting edge styling and colors and has been well received. We have recently introduced an economy package where frames AND lenses start as low as $99.00. When it comes to optics our lenses are second to none. I will only use the best technology in lenses and coatings. Anything else is a waste of money.”

Super Antioxidant Soup!

Monday, August 9th, 2010

I recently went to a cooking class at STIR in Boston on recipes inspired by

The River Cottage Cookbook by Hugh-Fearnley-Whittingstall.

We made Netttle Soup. Nettles are a weed like green that is hard to find.

I decided to adapt the recipe to maximize anti-oxidants for eye health.

Here is my variation:

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 peeled and chopped carrots

3 chopped celery stocks

1 chopped large white onion

1 bunch fresh parsley

½ bag of fresh spinach

5 large leaves of fresh kale

1 quart organic chicken or vegetable broth

2 tablespoons of brown or wild rice for thickening

salt & pepper to taste

Sweat the carrots, celery, and onions in olive oil in stock pot. Add parsley, spinach, kale, and chicken broth and simmer for 1 hour. Puree with hand held blender or place in blender. If it is not thick enough, add rice for thickening and blend. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with crusty muli-grain bread. Enjoy! It is good warm or cold.

Keamy Laser Eye Centre Adds an OCT!

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Keamy Eye & Laser Centre is excited to add an OCT diagnostic imaging device to its office. OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It is an exceptional tool that helps with early detection of glaucoma, progression of glaucoma, and macular edema from diabetes and age related macular degeneration. OCT imaging works similarly to an ultrasound; however, it uses light energy to measure tissue thickness and depth rather than sound energy. By using light, the OCT is not invasive at all. It does not even touch the eye. The OCT directs a beam of light into the eye, and the light bounces back differently from each different tissue. The OCT then quantifies the distances and thickness and produces and image for interpretation. Dr. Keamy believes that this sophisticated machine will enhance how well we can treat all patients. We will no longer have to refer them to Boston to obtain the results of this important, state of the art diagnostic tool for glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Dr. Jean Keamy is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, refractive surgery, eye lid surgery and diseases of the eye, including glaucoma. She owns Keamy Eye & Laser Centre on 24 Lyman St. in Westborough. Learn more at www.seemedrkeamy.com

INDICATOR OF EYE-CANCER RISK MAY BE SKIN DEEP, Jean Keamy, Community Advocate, June 4, 2009

INDICATOR OF EYE-CANCER RISK MAY BE SKIN DEEP

Most people are probably so unfamiliar with the topic of eye cancer that they are not even aware it exists, much less are aware of its symptoms and possible indicators. If so, many will be surprised to learn that researchers have recently uncovered a link between moles and freckles on the skin and uveal melanoma (cancer of the eye’s iris, ciliary body, or choroid). The common denominator is the melanocytes that are located in the uvea (the pigmented middle layer of the eye) and also are responsible for skin color. According to researchers, people with atypical moles were found to have nearly three times the risk of having melanoma of the  eye as those without the moles.

P.S. The incidence of uveal melanoma is quite rare (approximately 4.3 cases per million of population) and usually affects older individuals.

Throwing A “Wet” Blanket, Article, Community Advocate, May 24, 2009

THROWING A “WET” BLANKET

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the part of the eye needed for central vision and is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 60. While the “dry” form of AMD is vastly more common, “wet” (or neovascular) AMD accounts for 10% of cases but causes 90% of AMD-related vision loss. As abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, they leak blood and fluid and cause scar tissue that can result in sudden and severe vision loss. Until recently, most people with wet AMD had two options: photocoagulation or photodynamic therapy. Now there is a third. The FDA has approved pegaptanib, which is an aptamer, a drug that blocks the action of a substance that stimulates the formation of new blood vessels.

We are pleased to welcome you to our column. AT KEAMY EYE & LASER CENTRE, we look forward to helping you understand your needs and providing information so you can make an informed decision regarding vision correction. Additionally, we offer non-invasive cosmetic procedures and products to reduce lines around the eyes and face including: Botox, Radiesse, Juvederm, Silkpeel microdermabrasion, Latisse, and Obagi skincare.

P.S. According to a large clinical trial, treatment with pegaptanib significantly reduced the progression of vision loss in those with moderate to severe “wet” AMD one year after treatment.

Scaling Back, Jean Keamy, MD, Comm. Advocate, 5/8/09

SCALING BACK

Inflammation of the eyelids, “blepharitis,” which causes redness and scaly skin at the edges of the eyelids, is one of the most common eye problems among older adults. There are two types of blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis, which occurs at the outside edges of the eyelids, is often caused by bacteria or dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows. Interior blepharitis affects the inner edges of the eyelids and can be caused by irregular oil production by the meibomian glands. Regardless of which type of blepharitis a patient has, he or she will likely experience a gritty feeling in the affected eyes, as well as burning, tearing, and irritation. Treatment usually consists of warm compresses, cleansing, topical antibiotics, and massage.

Almost everyone gets blepharitis at some time in his or her life. Some people get it repeatedly. Fortunately, blepharitis is relatively easy to treat. At KEAMY EYE & LASER CENTRE, we provide comprehensive care for diseases of the eye. The most current scientific methods are used for the diagnosis and management of your vision problem.

P.S. Treatment of blepharitis is essential to avoid the potential for eyelash loss, thickened eyelids, and abnormal turning in/out of the eyelids.
